A-2 is an air hardening (cold work) tool steel with wear properties between 0-1 oil hardening and 0-2 air hardening.
A-2 offers good toughness with medium wear resistance along with relatively easy machining. A-2 also has excellent non-deforming properties. These characteristics have made A-2 a very popular and widely used material.
A-2 has a machinability rating of 65% of a 1% carbon tool steel.
A-2 is sold in the annealed condition. Typical annealed hardness is BHN 197/241 Rc 12/22.
A-2 maximum working hardness is BHN 698 Rc 62.
A-2 is capable of meeting ASTM-A681.

S-7 Mold Steel
S-7 is an air or oil hardening shock resisting (cold work) tool steel offering a unique combination of toughness and wear resistance. This material is primarily used in applications that require resistance to shock and/or impact.
S-7 can be used for both cold and hot tooling applications where a high degree of shock resistance is required but can also be used for dies in plastic molding and other applications where the operating temperatures are below 1;000 degrees.
S-7 has a machinability rating of about 75% of a 1% carbon tool steel.
S-7 is sold in the annealed condition. Typical annealed hardness is BHN 187/220 Rc 10/18.
S-7 maximum working hardness is BHN 615 Rc 58.`
S-7 incapable of meeting ASTM-A681. *Recommended Rc 55/56 to help prevent chipping. cracking or breaking.
